I had the privilege of sharing the importance of breadth as embodied in the College of the Ozarks general education curriculum which prepares students to tackle a wide range of tasks at work and in life. Cynics may question the evidence behind play’s benefits cited by Prof Pasi Sahlberg. However, anyone who has worked with children would know that it is self-evident play offers many advantages. Personally, I love to play and believe that children could have more space and time to play. Detractors to the above may say that it is too simplistic to think that play is the remedy for all our social ills and economic challenges. Afterall, the older generation used to play a lot more. But it was more years of schooling and higher education standards that lifted our societies and economies. There is no neat solutions especially on something as serious as play. Meanwhile, we need to strike a balance. Even as we maintain standards of learning in schools, don’t forget to put aside time for play, more or less.
