Now that you’ve completed the look, you get options to choose your voice, prisoner outfit and backstory. The prison garbs are simply the prisoner clothes you wear on your ship before heading into a mission. Meanwhile, the backstory and voices help to reflect your character’s voicelines, and how the voice actor and actresses play those lines. These options are largely RP, but, they do play a part in your character’s backstory and their role and personality in the 40k universe and setting.

Darktide Backstories Explained

Once you’re done making the actual look of your character, you can get onto the personalization of your Darktide character’s backstory. Some options reflect possible homeworlds, which adds to your character’s story. The options are:

  • Crucis - Shrine World, and the second world of the Moebian Domain space sector.
  • Messelina Gloriana - A small forest moon that is somewhat a shrine world.
  • Rocyria - Small agricultural world that gets insulted by the inhabitants of the space sub-sector.
  • Branx Magna - a soaring upcoming industrial planet with most dense population in the Moebian Domain.
  • Incron - Massive Ocean World used primarily as a fleet base for humanity.
  • Cadia - A recently destroyed fortress world inhabited by Necron Tombs and the Militarum after the invasion of Chaos
  • Mornax - Hazardous mining planet with a strong, yet dour population.
  • Pavane - Small populated planet, but still rich with natural resources with its destiny and future ahead of itself.

All of the planets are in the lore of the 40k universe. The most notable of them all in the lore is Cadia, which is a famous fortress planet that was fairly recently destroyed in terms of the 40k lore. Choosing this homeworld means your character was part of the war against Chaos, and you are a part of the saying, ‘Cadia broke before the Militarum’. This option on the Veteran Guardsman also gets an exclusive voice lines too. In-game, this means your Darktide backstory will reflect your a veterinary on the planet. One example in our game in the beta had a Veteran Guardsman from Cadia speak down as this rifleman who served on Cadia was indeed a Veteran and lived to tell the tale. Bare in mid Cadia is not part of the sub sector, which also adds some fun of how your character got from Cadian service, to becoming a prisoner fighting chaos loyalists.

As for the rest of the planets, they are all worlds in the same space sub-sector. This region’s main focus in the lore is that its a relatively safe area of the human-controlled universe. However, its main lore comes from the 30k millennia, which is known for the Horus Heresy. Each of the worlds had some story to play in the Horus Heresy and were all eventually liberated. Each planet has its own personalized role that helps the humankind space empire in some capacity. However, these are largely lore related and don’t seem to have much impact on the game and the voice line roleplay.

Moreso, you have your characters’ personality traits from the voice overs. These help to reflect the actual things you say during the other moments of the game. You can be more hostile, peaceful, or professional about things. These seem to affect dialogue options when your characters start talking about random things, such as the hordes of chaos on the way. This is by far the most important option you pick, and cannot be changed later on. Therefore, find the voice and the personality you like and stick with it.
